Questions and Answers
What age range does
Campbell Harris cater for in the full-time groups? We will take GCSE students as
young as 13, but only if they are mature for their age both academically
and socially. We have been especially successful with the '13-going-on-19'
type of youngster who needs to be treated like an adult. There is no upper
age limit and we accept a number of mature students. Because we do not
have an institutional atmosphere, adults of 20 and over feel comfortable
in our A level and GCSE groups. We often help Teacher Training applicants
who need a Maths GCSE pass or those with careers in the medical world who
cannot progress without Chemistry A level.
Where will the
other students at Campbell Harris come from? A fascinating
diversity of routes: public, state, and drama schools or home study; all
sorts of racial, religious and national backgrounds; from jobs, travelling
or running homes. A few come directly from abroad, but we do not actively
recruit overseas, preferring to have only a handful of 'foreign' students,
since we believe they will then quickly improve their English and adjust
to the lifestyle here, without holding back our classes of fluent
speakers.
What
extra-curricular activities do you offer? Apart from
subject-related trips - the theatre for English Literature and Theatre
Studies groups, Paris and the London galleries for History of Art, etc. -
we have a football team and throw Christmas and end-of-term parties. Our
past students are very loyal and will often return to meet up with their
ex-tutors. Because we have compact numbers, most students make friends
with most other students and the student body generates its own social
life.
Are there
many College rules? No petty rules. Strict punctuality and
attendance are insisted on, smoking is confined to one room and, most
importantly, homework must be completed fully and promptly. Civilised
adult conduct is expected and prevails; we have no discipline problems.
Drugs would not be tolerated but we can truthfully say that, whatever
experimentation a few of our students, in common with the majority of
young people in this country, may have indulged in out of college hours,
they have always respected our drug-free environment.
How will
you help me get good grades? You will acquire a complete set of
course notes and learn them thoroughly for monthly mini-mocks. Weekly
timed past-paper questions are set to improve your performance under test
conditions. If you have any specific area of weakness - for example poor
organisation, dyslexia or gaps in background knowledge - this will be
addressed individually. Skills such as essay-writing and research
techniques are taught as appropriate to each subject area. You tackle each
section of the syllabus, then revision, following a structured, systematic
programme. Your homework will be carefully marked with constructive
criticism to show you how to improve. Nothing less than your personal best
will be demanded. Expect your self-confidence and involvement level to
soar!
