Campbell Harris Examination Centre for Private Candidates

Which exams (A Level, A2, AS, GCSE, IGCSE) and boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC) can I register for as a private candidate (or external candidate) ?

Campbell Harris is a registered examination centre with all examination boards and offers a full range of examination services for GCSE, IGCSE and GCE AS and A2 (Advanced) qualifications. You can register for AQA, Edexcel and OCR qualifications and the Welsh Board, WJEC. We offer facilities for private candidates (sometimes know as independent candidates or external candidates) for November, January (winter) and May & June (summer). You can register with us to take an exam for the first time or for resits.

Can I be entered for the coursework option, if I am a private candidate?

We can sometimes accommodate private candidates wishing to offer coursework. However there are strict rules about authentication and verification of coursework, so candidates usually need to be registered as students with the College or associated with one of the recognised distance learning organisations (see below).

Can private candidates take practical examinations at your exam centre?

We offer practical examinations for GCE AS and A2 (advanced) Edexcel in Chemistry and Physics (supplementary fees apply). We can sometimes accommodate practical examinations for AQA and OCR specifications.

We run courses for practical examination practice for Chemistry and Physics and a short course for the coursework assessment for Edexcel Biology/Human Biology unit 3 in April. Fees apply.

Can private candidates take oral exams in Modern Languages at your examination centre?

We offer oral exams at GCSE level, AS level and A2 level with Edexcel in French, Spanish, German and Italian. Please contact us if you are interested in taking oral exams in other languages.

Do you offer advice and support to external candidates?

We offer one-to-one tuition in a range of subjects, as well as full time and part time studies. Special discounts apply for those registering for our Easter Revision courses. Students of any age welcome.

Distance learning organisations such as Open Oxford Learning (ww.ool.co.uk) and The National Extension College (www.nec.ac.uk) offer a wide range of GCSE and GCE courses for home study.

Private candidates need to ensure that they a fully familiar with the specification requirements and the format of the examinations. Details can be found on the boards' websites.

What do I need to do to register as a private candidate at your exam centre?

To register, candidates normally have to appear in person with:

Unit codes and options codes
ID (passport required)
Passport-size photograph
5 stamped self-addressed envelopes (A5 size)
Unique candidate identifier (UCI) if they have done GCE recently and/or are retaking units

Fees payable by cheque or cash.

Drop-in time 1.15pm – 1.45pm, Monday to Friday.

As a mature external candidate, my search for a centre willing to accept my entries for 2 A levels was quite difficult and was looking as if it was going to be very expensive and not geographically convenient. When I discovered Campbell Harris via an internet search and made a quick phonecall, I was delighted to find that the costs were half of that quoted anywhere else and that they had no difficulty in accomodating my practical exams. The centre was a straightforward tube journey away and very close to the station. I found plenty of nearby places for last minute revision and relaxation with a cup of coffee. Having sat 10 exams in January, I found what should have been a gruelling couple of weeks was alleviated by friendly, helpful staff and a well organised and documented schedule.
